PWSB Helps Build 13th Habitat Home in Ozaukee County

On July 17, the Habitat for Humanity team celebrated a significant milestone with the groundbreaking of a new home at 1028 Port View Drive, just off Spring Street in Port Washington. The event gathered the board of directors, dedicated volunteers, and generous sponsors to officially kick off the project at the site. Shown above is Chairman/COO Steve Schowalter and President/COO James Schowalter presenting a check to the President of Habitat for Humanity Ozaukee, Jim Meyer.

Community Support and Generous Donations

Port Washington State Bank stepped up as a key supporter, contributing $10,000 towards the build. While the home is nearly fully funded, there is still a shortfall of $25,000 to $30,000. The organization is actively seeking additional funding to close this gap and ensure the project’s timely completion. James Schowalter, President and COO, shared his reason for supporting the build. "Habitat's mission to help families enter homeownership with financial support and education is admirable, and we want to be a part of helping people achieve that goal. A home is a dream for many, but not always reachable. A lucky family will soon see their dreams come true."

Progress and Timeline

The project is underway, with plans to complete the basement by August and ensure the house is weather-tight by December. If everything goes according to plan, the entire construction should be finished by June next year, with the aim of having the new homeowners move in by September. Once finished, the home is expected to have a fair market value of $300,000 to $325,000.

finding a homeowner match

Habitat for Humanity is currently looking for a suitable homeowner match. The selected homeowner will be responsible for the principal payment on the first mortgage, which is based on the actual cost to build the home.

working together is key

Habitat for Humanity President Jim Meyer reflected on how special the day was for a family in the area. "The groundbreaking on Port View Drive marks another step forward in Habitat for Humanity’s mission to provide an affordable home to a family in our area. With the support of the community and generous sponsors like Port Washington State Bank, the dream of homeownership is becoming a reality for yet another deserving family. This gathering showcases the power of collaboration and generosity here in Port Washington, and I couldn't be more proud of our work to date."
